Last night the 2nd semi final of Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2013 took part with another six artists taking part. Tonight saw 3 songs qualify from this semi final plus the juries wildcard. So the finalists are:
"Only Teardrops" sung by Emmelie de Forest is the Danish entry for Eurovision 2013! She fought off tough competition, to advance to the superfinal 3 along with Simone and Mohammed. The final points were 1. Emmelie de Forest - 11 (jury) + 15 (public) = 26 2. Mohammed - 11 (jury) + 8 (public) = 19 3. Simone - 8 (jury) + 7 (public) = 15 You can listen to her performance here As I am sure you are all aware, it’s only 112 days till the final of Eurovision Song Contest 2013! Six countries have currently selected their songs, and these are available to hear on YouTube. These include: Ukraine, Switzerland, Albania, Belarus, Belgium and Lithuania. Tonight, is the Danish national final, “Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013”, which takes place in Herning, Denmark. The show starts at 20:30 CET and should be available to watch directly from the Melodi Grand Prix website, here. (Please note that eurovision.tv are not broadcasting this show tonight!) From the 692 songs that were submitted, 10 have been chosen. There is a great variety of dance and pop songs from Denmark this year, and they seem like a strong country! The winner will be selected from two round of voting, which both include 50% viewers’ votes and 50% professional jury votes. In the first round, the top 3 are selected. These top 3 then go onto the second round, and voting occurs again to select an overall winner. The songs are: Frederikke Vedel - "Jeg har hele tiden vidst det" Brinck - "Human" Kate Hall - "I'm Not Alone" Louise Dubiel - "Rejs dig op" Daze - "We Own The Universe" Simone Egeriis - "Stay Awake" Jack Rowan feat. Sam Gray - "Invincible" Emmelie de Forest - "Only Teardrops" Albin - "Beautiful To Me" Mohamed - "Unbreakable" Click here for a quick 30 second preview of each song: If you want to listen to the full versions, you need to go directly to the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix website (click here), and you can listen to all the full versions and decide your favourite! My personal opinions on the songs: 1. Frederikke Vedel - "Jeg har hele tiden vidst det" I like this entry very much. The ending is very strong. It will need very strong backing singers however, but it’s a nice dance song. Nothing too special though! Compared to the other entries you will hear tonight, this one might not stand out. 2. Brinck – “Human” Very quiet start to this song. The lyrics are very nice in my opinion, but his English doesn’t sound very clear. I’m not 100% sure this song is right for Eurovision, but I guess we will see tonight on what this song sounds live. I’m not very excited about this entry! 3. Kate Hall – “I’m Not Alone” At a first listen, I liked this song. The lyrics are English, and very easy to understand. It’s very upbeat and I like it very much. The very high notes at the end of the song are going to be very interesting to hear live tonight. This could be one to watch! 4. Louise Dubiel - "Rejs dig op" It’s not particularly exciting to be honest. It’s a pleasant song by all means, but nothing special. The drum beat gives it a catchy and edgy feeling, but it’s rather repetitive. I wouldn’t say this was one of the strong contenders, but it could surprise us all tonight! 5. Daze - "We Own The Universe" Daze are a 90s pop band. It’s very much Eurovision, but it may have fit in more in the 1990’s rather than 2013. I do like this song, as its upbeat. However the constant repetition of “We Own The Universe” does become slightly irritating. Has the classic key change at the end, and the final 20 seconds are very good indeed. Maybe a little dated however. 6. Simone Egeriis - "Stay Awake" This is the current “Danish Favourite” to win this contest. Simone is a fantastic singer. I do think the chorus is lacking something special. I hope the live performance improves this section, as this could be a fantastic choice if it is sung well. However, there needs to be very strong backing singers for this to succeed. I think this is definitely one to watch. 7. Jack Rowan feat. Sam Gray - "Invincible" My first hearing of this song, I wasn’t keen at all. Until the chorus comes in, it’s a little boring in places! But it’s very different from what we have previously heard at Eurovision. If the male solo singer sings this song perfectly, it could be a good song. 8. Emmelie de Forest - "Only Teardrops" WOW. This is quite clearly my favourite of the selection. The flute and her voice are simply amazing. I think this song is a potential winner tonight. If it gets a good draw place, preferably towards the end of the night, it could have very high chances indeed. This song all depends on the live performance, and if this is weak, its chances could quite easily be compromised. 9. Albin - "Beautiful To Me" This isn’t my type of song that I like to listen to. However, it’s quite interesting and reminds me a little of the Danish entry in 2011, “A Friend in London”. It has the same sort of feel to it. I like the string instruments used towards the end of the track. 10. Mohamed - "Unbreakable" This song is ranked in the top 3 on favourites to win, and I can quite easily hear why! It’s catchy, edgy and a great song. If Mohamed sings this as good as the track studio version, and also if he dances (which I hope he does!) this could be very, very good indeed. I predict this to come in the top 3. So, that is my opinions on the 10 entries presented by Denmark. Overall, I think it’s a fantastic selection, and I wouldn’t mind 6 of those songs to actually represent Denmark. Compared to last year, I think the standard for Denmark has increased dramatically! My top 5 are (in no particular order): Mohamed – “Unbreakable” Emmelie de Forest - "Only Teardrops" Kate Hall – “I’m Not Alone” Simone Egeriis - "Stay Awake" Frederikke Vedel - "Jeg har hele tiden vidst det" However it’s not my opinion that counts!
